Ovulating / Ovulation how do you know when you are ovulating? When you are ovulating is important to know because it is the only time a woman can get pregnant during her cycle. Ovulation is the time during a women’s cycle when eggs are released from the ovaries into the fallopian tube.
In order to get pregnant, sperm must be present during the period of ovulation, so it is vital to have intercourse just prior and during the time the woman is ovulating.
How Can You Tell When You are Ovulating?
There are a number of ways a woman can try to detect when she is ovulating; however the accuracy and reliability of methods vary.
In the past, basal body thermometers have been popular. These allow a woman to chart her temperature during her cycle and watch for changes to indicate ovulation. They can be used successfully but require more work than other methods and can sometimes be inaccurate.
More recently, urine ovulation predictor kits have become available at affordable prices. These monitor the body for certain hormones that increase as ovulation approaches. They are very accurate and are especially helpful for women whose ovulating cycle varies a lot.
Also available to find out when you are ovulating are ovulation scopes. These allow women to check a saliva sample for distinct patterns that should occur only during ovulation. These are also very accurate but can be more difficult to use.
How Do Ovulation Tests Tell When I Am Ovulating?
Ovulation tests work by detecting Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in urine. Using a set of ovulation tests, a woman can watch as LH levels grow and peak. After this point, known as ovulation surge, a fertile egg will be released within 24-48 hours.
