When you are in college, eating healthy is quite a challenge. Whether you like it or not, you may end up stuck with the cafeteria meal options. Meals in the cafeteria may not be the healthiest choice, but are definitely calories-rich. Other source of food are the shops and restaurants in and around the campus. There you have more options, but alas, not many healthy ones. So how should you cope with day to day challenges in college if you’re not having healthy meals? Here are 5 tips how to eat healthy in college.
1. Be smart in the cafeteria
Check the menu first. Don’t make the mistake by eating your favorite meal every day, especially if it is loaded with calories.
Hit the salad bar first. You can have meal of nice and healthy salad topped with piece of chicken, tuna or cheese.
Skip the dessert. Instead, opt for healthy snack like frozen yogurt with granola or nuts.
2. Be smart with your snacks
Try to avoid late-night snacks. If it’s a must, then try to have healthy snack such as fruits or nuts. Although they may seem to be “light” meals, snacks may be packing lots of calories, sugar and fat. This is the case with ice-creams, potato or corn chips, chocolate, coffee latte.
3. Be smart with your drinking
Drink water whenever circumstances allows it. Avoid drinking sodas. One can of Pepsi packs incredible 40 grams sugar, which translates to almost 3 pounds of sugar per month, if you drink only one can a day. Alcohol packs a lot of sugar, too. Single shot of Tequila packs 96 calories. Energy drinks are packed with sugar and calories. One regular Red Bull packs 110 calories and 27 grams (almost 2 tablespoons) of sugar.
4. Keep scales in your room
Why? Because scales will show you how to eat healthy in college. Make sure that you weigh at the same time every day. That way you’ll have accurate reading for a longer period. If you notice that you are gaining weight – make corrections to your diet and exercise plan. If you notice you are losing weight – try to replicate that diet and exercise plan again.
